Working Out and Working Outdoors
- Always have some H2O to go to keep you hydrated.
- Opt for lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothes in natural fibers. A hat will keep your head cool and protect you from the sun.
- Avoid being outdoors during the hottest hours of the day: between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Learn how to prevent heat-related illnesses. Seek medical care right away if you become nauseous, vomit or experience cramps.
- Pace yourself, start slowly. If you must work quickly, pick up the pace gradually.
- If you're experiencing fast heartbeat, shortness of breath and/or weakness, STOP all activity. Rest in a shaded area to recover body's temperature.
- If working outdoors, monitor the condition of co-workers.
Outdoor Activities
- When riding bicycles, scooters or skateboards, always wear a helmet.
- When you hear thunder roar, go indoors to avoid lightning strikes.
- Cross the street carefully. Read more pedestrian safety tips.
- Make sure pets have plenty of clean water and a shaded place to rest.
- Moderate pets' exercise on the hottest days and keep them indoors if the temperature is too high.
- The best place to be during a heat wave is inside with air conditioning.
- If you don't have an air conditioner, visit public places when the temperature is too high. Places such as shopping malls or libraries are open during the day and may provide respite.
